List: Reasons it’s not so bad being injured, really

If you’re a regular reader, you may recall that I’ve been struggling with some athletic injuries in the last six months or so. If you’re not, I’ll summarize quickly because there’s not all that much to it: I ran a trail marathon and it was hard. Then I signed up for a 50k, but then my foot started falling asleep, which seemed bad. Also my right IT band always hurts. I briefly thought I had plantar fasciitis. Back to basics

No one is ever going to ask me to describe my climbing style in a single word, but if they did, it would be “serviceable.” As with most activities I take on, I am a profoundly mediocre rock climber.

This also goes for skiing, which I’ve been doing for something like a quarter-century. Despite skiing many hundreds of days, I am still a “Well, I can get down just about anything, but it might not be pretty” skier. After nearly a decade, I am an extremely intermediate mountain biker. I’ve been distance running since I was a freshman in high school, yet here I remain, the slowest marathoner you know.  Continue reading “Back to basics”

The shoes I never knew I needed

In 2017, I decided I was going to run a 50k. If you’re reading this, you’re of one of two minds on the subject. You’re either scoffing at the idea of needing a whole year to work up to 50 kilometers because you are a superhuman, or you’re doing the math in your head (“50 kilometers is… 31 miles? Can that be right?”) and wondering why on earth anyone would want to do a thing like that. Continue reading “The shoes I never knew I needed”

It’s no picnic being a sick-nick

At the end of last week, I felt great. I was mostly caught up with work, we had a trip to Taos on the books that weekend, my new running shoes meant my toes didn’t fall asleep after two miles of painfully slow jogging (more on that later).

And then, on the drive home from New Mexico, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I blew my nose and made pathetic whimpering sounds until I fell asleep, and then I staggered into the house and essentially slept for three days. Continue reading “It’s no picnic being a sick-nick”

Obligatory New Year post

I’ve never been much for resolutions. I have a hard time making myself commit to anything I’m not sure I’ll still be into in six months. (There’s probably a metaphor in there.)

Generally, if I’m put on the spot, I’ll resolve to drink more water. This is easy and everyone could stand to do it, but I never actually do. Would my life be magically transformed if I’d finish off a few Nalgenes every day? Probably.  Continue reading “Obligatory New Year post”
